Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino
The Martín Chirino Foundation for Art and Thought opened its doors on 28th March 2015 at the emblematic Castillo de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The building, which marks the beginnings of the city following the colonisation of the island, is linked to the sculptor’s own personal history, given that Martín Chirino was born close to La Isleta.
This cultural institution was founded in order raise awareness of Martín Chirino’s artistic career. The Foundation’s bylaws include the following objectives: to promote the study, dissemination and awareness of the artistic output and life of Martín Chirino, as well as to catalogue all of his works. At the same time, the Foundation seeks to provide an active centre for intellectual activity and the humanities, one that is open to reflection and debate.
The work of Martín Chirino, one of the most outstanding Spanish artists on the international scene during the second half of the twentieth century, provides an ideal vehicle for contextualising and promoting the Canary Islands’ valuable cultural heritage within the complex world of today.
