Martín Chirino (Gran Canaria, 1925) is the most cosmopolitan of the 20th-century Canary artists. Winner of the Spanish National Award for Fine Arts, he was an art intellectual who never turned his back on his roots, the Canary Islands, where this foundation has been set up in his name. He has a staggering body of work, found in public squares, museums and collections. He never stopped drawing and sculpting.

Castillo de La Luz, the oldest castle in the region was declared an artistic historic monument in 1941. It is home to Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino [the Martín Chirino Foundation], a space for art, debate and culture in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that brings together history, archaeology and the work of this universal artist.
