The Martín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation inaugurates on May 17, at its headquarters in the Castillo de La Luz de Las Palmas, the exhibition Martín Chirino: Tribute to music. The sonority of matter, co-curated by David Cortés Santamarta, professor of Aesthetics and Art Theory at the University of La Laguna and music critic; and Jesús M. Castaño, director of the Martín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation. The exhibition, which will be open to the public from May 18 to September 1, will coincide with the publication of the fourth bilingual monograph (Spanish and English) on the Canarian artist framed in the Martín Chirino Encyclopedia, of which Reinas Negras has already been published by Alfonso de la Torre. Afrocán, written by Antonio Manuel González and Vientos by Fernando Castro Flórez. The exhibition and the edition of the volume have the collaboration of several public and private entities, among which it is worth highlighting the Governments of Spain and the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the City Council of Las Palmas and the support of Fundación “la Caixa” through Caixabank. More than 50 works by various authors and techniques will be brought together, all related to music and its influence on art. These, in addition to including some of the funds from Chirino's legacy, come from the Azcona Collection, the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as other public institutions such as the Reina Sofía, the Picasso Museum of Barcelona, the IVAM or the Academy of San Fernando and private collections. Authors such as Picasso, Juan Gris, Dalí, Bruce Nauman, Lipchitz, Ángel Ferrant, Man Ray, Óscar Domínguez, Peter Moor, Pedro de Acosta and Pablo Serrano, among others, are also represented on the tour. 19 of them will be sculptures, drawings and medals by Martín Chirino himself and in this corpus the Homage to Music series stands out. This is a group of eight pieces (plus one unfinished one) that the author made between 1995 and 2019. These works – due to their version of string instruments such as the guitar, violin or cello – make clear their relationship with Cubism and the impact that the avant-garde had on their production.
