MARTÍN CHIRINO. AFROCÁN

El Oráculo del Viento

Beginning in 1974, the Afrocanes series of sculptures by Martín Chirino, with their enigmatic fusion of mask and mirror, form the link that the sculptor makes in the midst of all his artistic creations, to open up a space of communication and reflection between his islands and the great African continent.

The overriding oval shape of the sculptures seems to contemplate, impassive, the terrible solitude of contemporary man. The spiral, that ancestral symbol of aboriginal Canary culture and an emblem of Chirino’s work, reveals his voice, like an oracle, inside these African masks, to proclaim a shared legacy.

The Canary artist, forged between two worlds, feels the need to examine his own identity in the radical otherness of cultures lying on the other side of the Atlantic, but yet are no different from that of the islands. In the synthesis conveyed through the generic name of this group of works, Afrocán - a neologism coined by the artist resulting from the fusion of the two place names - there is a twofold dimension, Canary and African, exalted in the imposing presence of the works.
