Argamasa

Argamasa by Abraham Riverón is the winning project of the Martín Chirino 2023 Artistic Residency, a project in which its author is working and whose objective is the study and investigation of the fortification and defense spaces of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria through contemporary art. In this way, it is intended to work in relation to the representation of power through architecture, sculpture and the monument.

In these months of residency, the artist is investigating these fortified spaces through the warlike and historical elements that define them in order to discover the role they play today. Spaces such as the Castillo de San Francisco, Castillo de Mata or Castillo de la Luz, where the Martín Chirino Foundation is located, are the starting point for understanding how these spaces are built, what their uses and conditions are, their materiality and monumentality, and how these fortifications can be taken as allegories of present problems for contemporary artistic creation.

He also works on how the fortifications are linked to the monument. As much as the castles themselves become monuments of historical events, as well as the way in which the sculptures inhabited those spaces. This is the example of the work ' El Alisio' by Martín Chirino, located next to the Castillo de Santa Catalina in Santa Cruz de La Palma or the work of the sculptor present in the Castillo de La Luz.
